The lack of Champions League football on offer at Manchester United raises cause for concern.
Top players don’t want to be playing in the Europa League, that’s just the natural order of things. One player who has been heavily rumoured with an Old Trafford exit is Romelu Lukaku. One report we covered from Gazzetta dello Sport’s Nicolo Schira went as far as saying that the player had already agreed personal terms with Inter.
Yesterday, Gazzetta’s print edition (translated via Sport Witness) have gone big. They say that United have been offered Mauro Icardi by Inter, as the Serie A giants look to try and build a deal with the Old Trafford outfit.
The 26-year-old Icardi has always scored goals, although after his relationship with the fans has become strained, it does seem as if Inter are trying to move on from the Argentine.
Apparently, several players have been offered to United, each one has been rejected with the Reds looking for straight cash to let the 26-year-old leave.
Lukaku has done his best to try and force a move through, but United’s stance hasn’t wavered as they look to secure a fee of around €80m (£72m) to let their #9 leave.
The striker hasn’t exactly been bad at United, scoring 42 goals across two seasons is a pretty decent return. However, the fans have never really taken to his playing style. Perhaps it doesn’t truly fit with what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to achieve, with the Baby Faced Assassin seemingly favouring Marcus Rashford in the striker position.
United’s summer has started slowly in terms of both incomings and outgoings, but you get the feeling that these next few weeks before pre-season tour starts will be huge.
Major overhaul is needed and it’s going to take time to push deals over the line. I get the feeling there’s going to be a few disappointed Reds still at the club come August, one possibly being Lukaku – unless Inter meet United’s demands.
