Back on June 17th, we covered a story from France Football in which it was claimed that Manchester United had ‘made contact’ with Willian’s representatives – as the Reds looked for Jadon Sancho alternatives.
Well last night, half of that has been backed up by the Daily Mail. They state that United are to wait on their £100million Sancho move, though they’re less than convinced about United in regards to a Willian deal.
They state that United have been offered the chance to sign the classy 31-year-old, presumably on a free transfer as his contract winds down. However, the Brazilian doesn’t fit the mould of the young, British player that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown a preference towards.
As a stop-gap, United could do worse than Willian in my opinion. He’s Premier League proven, experienced and he will score goals – albeit in fits and spurts.
The problem is that he’d want hefty wages and a long contract due to their being no transfer fee attached with his signature. United probably don’t want to commit to a multi-year deal at this stage in his career, particularly if they’re going to go back after Sancho next summer.
If the price is right and Willian accepts a one-year deal, I’d be all for it. Solskjaer probably has other options in mind, though.
