Man United could be presented with an opportunity to sign Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi.
Manchester United have been linked with what feels like every decent centre-back under the sun this summer. It makes sense. The Reds are the biggest club in the world and they have no choice but to sign a defender of some description.
Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt appear to be the two standout candidates currently, though do not rule out a move to sign Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace man has been linked with an Old Trafford switch this summer.
Now, The Sun have provided an update on that front, claiming United are on ‘high alert’ over the potential signing. Arsenal are also keen.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed an excellent summer away with England, putting in some masterful performances at the heart of the Three Lions defence.
His current club, Crystal Palace, were initially hopeful about keeping Guehi after losing Michael Olise. However, those plans may change.
Guehi has a winding down contract with two years left on his deal, with the England international unwilling to sign new terms. As a result, the Premier League club could be ‘forced’ to cash in on the Reds transfer target this summer in order to maximise value.
Palace want to tie Guehi down to a new deal which will include a release clause, though the player has no intention of signing those terms. He’s keen to explore his options.
I like Guehi, though I would much prefer to see either Branthwaite or De Ligt come in first. He’d be an excellent third option – but only at the right price. Perhaps this is a signing that the club could re-visit next summer if Guehi does remain at Palace for another season. At that point he’d be entering into the final year of his deal, making him even cheaper.
