Credit where it’s due, Manchester United are not giving up in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
Not too long ago, we were under the impression that Frenkie de Jong was just an unobtainable transfer target. Purely due to the Dutchman’s desire to remain at FC Barcelona.
Since then, the media has slowly swung to the other side of things, with claims suggesting that Manchester United were still pushing hard to sign the Dutchman.
The latest update came yesterday from Jason Burt in the Telegraph, and it’s another big one.
He writes that United have formally opened talks to sign De Jong, with Erik ten Hag identifying the Reds’ lack of a creative passer as their biggest weakness. Obviously, the Barcelona midfielder would fill that hole.
It’s thought that personal terms with De Jong will not be a problem, who would like to work with Ten Hag yet again. The pair were both part of the Ajax side that made it to the Champions League semi-final a few years ago.
Initially, it was thought that De Jong was indeed reluctant to leave Barcelona, but their desire to part with the Dutchman has changed the situation.
Burt writes that United have opened talks with Barcelona and an initial offer has already been made for the club to sign the 25-year-old this summer.
Suddenly, it feels like United signing De Jong is a genuine possibility, rather than an absolute shot in the dark.
I’d love to see this move happen. De Jong could walk straight into most sides in world football, with the former Ajax man filling a huge need here at Old Trafford if the transfer does happen.
For me, it all comes down to whether De Jong actually wants to be here. If the answer to that question is yes, then I’d go all out to get this deal done as soon as possible.
