A Man United transfer for Thiago Alcantara seems to get hyped up every summer. Well, here we go again…
To us here at Old Trafford Faithful, it looked for all the world like Liverpool were going to complete a deal for the Spaniard pretty easily. Well, we’re now a month or so down the line and no transfer has been agreed.
That has seemingly given United an opportunity to make their move. Not content with adding Donny van de Beek, it looks as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still keen on adding yet another midfielder.
They state that United have begun talks with the 29-year-old’s ‘representatives’, though at this stage, a formal bid hasn’t been made.
What’s interesting is that it’s claimed Thiago is open to a Reds transfer, despite the fact he’d like to work with Jurgen Klopp.
Again, my opinion doesn’t change. United should only be signing players who want to be here. To his credit, Solskjaer has been excellent at working that out and acquiring the right players.
Thiago would be deemed a risk due to what would be a low transfer fee – but presumably an incredibly-high wage. I’d urge United to only make the move unless he fully buys into what’s happening at Old Trafford.
Where would Thiago fit in?
Again, it’s about squad depth. Thiago sits a little deeper than Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes, in that ‘quarterback role’. The Spaniard possesses excellent vision, passing and work-rate so I don’t doubt that a slot in the team could be carved out for him.
What this move signals to me is that someone could possibly be on the way out. I’d be surprised if Paul Pogba is allowed to leave at this time, though there have been whispers about Fred’s position at Old Trafford. In terms of direct comparison in the current United squad, Thiago and Fred are the most closely-matched.
At this stage, I’d be surprised if we saw Thiago arrive. However, if Fred does leave, expect United’s interest in the Spaniard to grow.
