Man United open talks with Barcelona over Ivan Rakitic: report

Manchester United Football Club have been struggling in two key areas of the field since the season’s start, with the Reds having problems creating chances and sticking them in the back of the net.

Obviously, you look at the forward line as an issue, whereas signing a midfielder is another serious need.

Well today, FC Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic is the latest playmaker to be linked with a potential Old Trafford move.

The story comes from Sport, who state that United have opened talks over the potential signing of the 31-year-old Croat.

Furthermore, Barcelona are now open to the sale in January – but are demanding €40m (£34m) to let Rakitic leave in the mid-season window.

United would face some competition over the player, though, with Inter Milan also making early contact with the Nou Camp club as they’ve also enquired about Rakitic’s availability.

For me, there’s no doubt that Rakitic would be an upgrade in a position of need for United. However, the midfielder isn’t getting any younger and there’s a reason why Barcelona haven’t utilised him anywhere near as much this campaign.

How many good years would you get out of Rakitic? Two maybe? Then United would have to replace him, thus being back at square one. I’d honestly prefer the club to wait until next summer and sign someone who can do the job in the long-term.
