Man United are now in talks with PSV Eindhoven over the signing of Cody Gakpo.
Manchester United were interested in bringing in Cody Gakpo over the summer, though sadly, rising costs in the Antony deal scuppered any move.
The links to Gakpo have cropped back up over the last week or so, with the Red Devils’ renewing their keenness on signing the Dutchman in the wake of losing Cristiano Ronaldo.
After an impressive World Cup, it’s easy to see why Erik ten Hag was keen on acquiring his fellow Dutchman.
Now, according to The Mirror, it has been confirmed that United have ‘opened talks’ with PSV Eindhoven to sign the player.
United instigated their move for Gakpo during the week, after learning of PSV’s financial issues, with the Dutch club preparing to let Gakpo leave for less than £50m in the mid-season window.
Ten Hag firmly believes Gakpo’s arrival will help bolster the Reds’ chances at finishing inside the top four, bringing ‘hunger and aggression’ to the table – something which Ronaldo no longer could do at age 37.
United face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United to sign Gakpo, though the Red Devils seem to have stolen a march on their rivals.
In terms of more good news, personal terms aren’t thought to be a problem after Gakpo made it clear he was happy with what sort of wages were on offer during the summer negotiations between the parties.
Initially, I just assumed there was little-to-no chance of this deal happening after the club spent big over the summer. It’s pleasantly surprising to learn that there seems to be an excellent chance United will sign Gakpo next month.
