Man United will not let Scott McTominay leave on the cheap, amid interest from Newcastle United.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad is now starting to take shape. The gaffer knows who he trusts and perhaps, more importantly, who he doesn’t.
Obviously, this overhaul was going to take time given the shape the squad was in when he took charge. Big changes were made in his first summer transfer window. No doubt the same will take place this time around, too.
Big money will have to be spent, whereas other players will simply leave to find minutes elsewhere. One man whose future is by no means secure is Scott McTominay.
The Scotland international has started the last few games following the international break, though before said break, minutes were hard to come by.
Newcastle United interest in the United youth product has been well documented. Now, the Daily Star have provided another update on his future.
Apparently, United have played a £50m price-tag on the 26-year-old player, telling Newcastle to ‘cough up’ a vast amount of money. Some of that is down to the fact that United would be selling to a direct rival.
McTominay has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time, with Eddie Howe believing that he’d be an ‘ideal addition’ to their squad in the off-season.
There can be no doubt that McTominay is enjoying a purple patch right now, though he’s always been a hot and cold player.
The fact remains that when everyone is fit, he’s more than likely fighting for a spot on the bench rather than a regular starter. The likes of Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Fred and even Marcel Sabitzer are all ahead in the pecking order.
If United can somehow get £50m out of Newcastle for McTominay, I think they have no choice but to do it.
