Manchester United have their first trophy under Erik ten Hag, with the Reds well in control against Newcastle United. Here are our player ratings.
David de Gea – Had a quiet afternoon in truth. Distributed well and ensured his back line were in control. 6/10
Diogo Dalot – Picked up an early booking which meant he had to defend in a less aggressive manner. Did well enough. 5/10
Raphael Varane – As cool and calm as you like. Dealt with every threat that came his way. Exemplary. 7/10
Lisandro Martinez – Defended on the front foot as per usual. Took no rubbish from Wilson et al. Excellent. 7/10
Luke Shaw – Ran Casemiro close for the MOTM award. His assist for the opener was sublime. Defended well and bombed forward where possible. 8/10
Casemiro – Set United on their way with a delightful header. Broke up play all game. Surveyed and assessed the situation from deep like a top-class veteran. 9/10
Fred – Had a decent hour before being subbed off. Covered every blade of grass for the cause. Booked. 6/10
Bruno Fernandes – Worked hard, though wasn’t really involved in an offensive capacity. 5/10
Antony – Toyed with Burn down that side at times. Kept possession well. Looked good. 6/10
Marcus Rashford – Now has this aura about him. Newcastle players looked scared when he had the ball at feet. The second goal was him at his best. 6/10
Wout Weghorst – Led the press and set the example. His play in the build-up to the second goal was outstanding. Almost had one of his own. 7/10
Subs:
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Sublime in that second 45. Gave ASM no room at all.
Marcel Sabitzer – Helped swing the tide of the game back in United’s favour with some crunching tackles and slick passing.
Scott McTominay – Broke up the play on some important occasions.
Jadon Sancho – Not enough time to mark.
Harry Maguire – Not enough time to mark.
