Man United player ratings vs Chelsea as Reds lose FA Cup semi-final 3-1 (2020)

Well, Manchester United’s FA Cup run is over. The Red Devils were well-beaten by Chelsea on the day, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tinkered his side (and formation). In the end, Frank Lampard’s side were worthy winners. If you can stomach them, here are our Man United player ratings vs Chelsea…

David de Gea – I’m struggling to think of the last time he had a game this bad? Two mistakes for Chelsea’s first couple of goals. An argument can be made he shouldn’t be getting beaten at his near-post for their third, either. *That* Mason Mount clanger could signal the beginning of the end for him… 2/10

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Not good enough. The ball was bouncing off him, his passing was sloppy and he didn’t get forward anywhere near as often as we’d like. 3/10

Victor Lindelof – Beaten by his runner again for the Chelsea opener. Showed poor strength and positioning. It was nice to see him burst forward and try to make things happen. I guess that’s the benefit of a back three…? 3/10

Harry Maguire – Took another teammate out, this time it as Eric Bailly. He looked lost with the ball at his feet and missed another header. A bad day at the office for our captain, rounded off with what looks like an own-goal. 3/10

Eric Bailly – I hope he’s okay after a nasty head injury. Started the game fairly brightly, too. Get well soon, Eric! 5/10

Brandon Williams – Misplaced a couple of passes, one led to the Mount goal. He tried to get forward and make things happen, but it just wasn’t his day. 4/10

Nemanja Matic – Was a bystander for the most part. Didn’t offer the back four the protection that they’ve become accustomed to. 4/10

Fred – Nonexistent. Couldn’t get a grip on the game from midfield and that’s a big factor as to why United lost. 4/10

Bruno Fernandes – Chelsea nullified him. Didn’t get on the ball anywhere near as much as we needed him to. Did tuck away a penalty late on. 5/10

Daniel James – Hasn’t started in months and it showed. Couldn’t get the ball under his spell and he never really troubled a stern Chelsea back line. 3/10

Marcus Rashford – Frustrating. The ball was bouncing off him and it felt like he never had it under control. Perhaps he needs a rest. 3/10

Subs:

Anthony Martial – There were times when I forgot he was playing.

Paul Pogba – Dreadful. Got caught on the ball way too many times.

Mason Greenwood – Couldn’t get on the ball.

Odion Ighalo – Didn’t get into it.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah – Not enough time to mark.
