Man United are looking to make a late bid to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford this summer.
Manchester United Football Club have signed Joshua Zirkzee to help Rasmus Hojlund in the goalscoring department this season, though the Dutchman has already described himself as a number ‘9.5’ rather than an out-and-out striker.
That could lead to Erik ten Hag deciding to bring in another pure finisher, in order to ensure that the goals will flow in the 2024/25 season. Among the names linked with filling that void is Ivan Toney.
The Englishman is expected to leave Brentford this summer, as the forward looks for a new challenge. However, no club has backed up their interest with a serious bid as of yet.
That could force Brentford’s hand, due to the fact that Toney has just one year left on his contract. Football Insider have shared their latest information on that front, as the Reds look to take advantage of the situation.
According to their information, United are now ‘plotting’ a late bid to sign the proven striker this summer. The 20-time Premier League champions are looking to bring in an experienced forward, with Toney on the list.
With Toney entering into the final year of his contract, Brentford have lowered their £70m asking price by £20m, with the London club now after £50m for the Englishman.
Toney has scored 65 goals and added 21 assists in his 85 Premier League matches, which is a truly remarkable return. However, he’s barely played football over the last year and that could be a minor concern, hence why no side has made a real push to sign the striker to this point.
I’m still not sure United have the funds to sign Toney for £50m, unless one or two major player sales happen over the next few weeks. One thing is for sure, Toney would add personality and passion to a dressing room that probably could do with a little more of that.
