Manchester United’s squad is still in need of a pretty large overhaul. There’s no doubt that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made three promising signings over the summer, though that has to be just the start.
The 20-time Premier League champions have several holes to fill, but for me, the biggest need is signing a midfielder who can carve out chances. Enter, James Maddison.
Stories linking the attacker with a move to Old Trafford are happening pretty frequently. The latest we covered came from the Daily Star, who stated that United were ready to press ahead with the transfer.
Now, in an exclusive, the Daily Mirror have gone one better. They state that Solskjaer is ‘desperate to lure’ the 23-year-old to United. Furthermore, they’re ‘prepared’ to make a player-plus-cash offer in a bid to persuade the foxes.
Apparently, United want to give up £45million and Jesse Lingard in an attempt to make Maddison their latest signing.
The article states that the Reds value Lingard at £40million, taking the total transfer fee to £85million, which is £5million more than the figure that was in the aforementioned Daily Star article.
However, I’m not sure £85million would be enough to sign Maddison. I’m also not convinced Lingard is worth £40m, while Leicester would probably want straight-up cash.
With all that said, Maddison would be an absolutely unbelievable signing if the Old Trafford outfit can somehow pull it off. It does make sense for United to try and get rid some of the players they seemingly no longer want to keep, though that’s going to be hard, particularly when Lingard has no league goals or assists in 2019.
Either way, this looks like a summer deal rather than a mid-season window one so Solskjaer and United are going to have to remain patient. What a signing this would be though…
