Man United preparing bid for Barca’s Ronald Araujo: report

Man United are set to firm up their interest in Ronald Araujo with an official bid.

Defensively, Manchester United have been a hot mess this season. Captain Harry Maguire continues to make mistake after mistake, while Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane (injury-wise) have had their own issues.

That probably leaves the Old Trafford club thinking about further investing in that area of the pitch, which is sad in itself given how much money has been spent on the back line.

Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo is the newest name to be consistently linked with an Old Trafford move. The Uruguay international has come on leaps and bounds as a footballer over the last year or so.

The claim comes from El Nacional, with the translation via our friends over at Stretty News. Apparently, United are preparing a £33.6m bid to sign the 23-year-old defender this summer.

Araujo’s contract at the Camp Nou is winding down, with a little over twelve months left on his current deal.

On top of that, Barca’s latest attempt to tie the centre-half down to a new deal has failed, which could, in theory, leave United in a stronger position when it comes to moving for Araujo.

As is always the case, there’s a chance that Araujo is using United interest in order to get himself a better contract at Barca. However, he’s probably too good-of-a-footballer for United to just ignore. They should be pushing hard to sign a player of his calibre.

If a move was somehow pulled off, it’d also mean United getting younger at the centre-back position. Suddenly, we have a lot of experienced players in that portion of the field. All will need replacing over the next few years. If we can bring in Araujo now and give him a year to settle before those senior guys move on, we’d be in a far better position.
