Manchester United need to sign a new central midfielder this summer. Marouane Fellaini left in January while Ander Herrera walked away just a few weeks ago. Neither have been replaced to this point.
One player the club are interested in is Everton’s Idrissa Gana Gueye, according to the Liverpool Echo. Apparently, United are ‘admirers’ of the man from Senegal – but the Old Trafford club are ‘reluctant’ to meet the Blues’ £35million+ asking price.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rates Gueye highly but with Everton standing firm on their asking price, at this stage it is unlikely that a deal will be done.
The Reds badly need a new midfielder who can sit in and protect the back four. Nemanja Matic did a decent job but he’s just not mobile enough, while I’m not convinced that Scott McTominay has the desired quality.
With Gueye turning 30 in just a few months, this would be a short-term fix for a long-term problem. It’d paper over the cracks for a year or two then United would be back at square one with the same problem.
If Solskjaer is planning for the future I’d much prefer to see him move for someone younger. I like the look of Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi who does a similar job. He’s only 22 and although he’d likely cost far more, you’d be getting more bang for your buck.
