Man United re-open talks with Everton to sign Jarrad Branthwaite, with a big-money bid being prepared.
Manchester United Football Club were always in the market for at least one centre-back this summer. Erik ten Hag’s back line was an absolute travesty last season, largely due to injuries decimating the squad.
Leny Yoro was signed out of absolutely nowhere. Though he’s now out for a minimum of three months. It looks like Matthijs de Ligt is going to join the Old Trafford side. Surely, that’ll be it in the centre-back market?
Well, Football Insider doesn’t seem to think so…
Cast your mind back to the start of the window, when Jarrad Branthwaite was being heavily linked with a switch to the Theatre of Dreams. Apparently, that dream isn’t dead…
According to FI, United have re-opened talks with Everton to sign the 22-year-old in a ‘shock’ transfer ‘twist’.
They claim that United are set to submit a £60m bid to Everton for Branthwaite this week.
Sources have told FI that United are ‘confident’ Everton will accept that bid, despite the fact that at least two previous bids have been turned down this summer.
FI know that a De Ligt deal is close but they still believe a third defender in Branthwaite will be acquired before the end of the window. They do believe it could lead to the departure of at least one centre-half currently at the club. In that event, you immediately have to look at both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, who have faced uncertain futures for each of the last two transfer windows.
I have to be honest, I struggle to believe how this deal gets done. United just don’t have that sort of money lying around to sign another centre-back, particularly when there’s a gaping hole in the Red Devils midfield.
