Manchester United had an immensely quiet deadline day in terms of both incomings and outgoings.
It seems clear that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will only spend money when the right player comes along – which, for me anyway, is a welcome change.
One man the Red Devils were linked with on more than one occasion this summer was Sean Longstaff. Well, according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, United actually reopened talks to sign the 21-year-old this week.
Obviously, those talks were ultimately unsuccessful. In terms of price, discussions went above £30m with the Reds prepared to pay big to sign the midfielder – though they were met with a firm no from Newcastle.
Buying in the market is harder than ever. Transfer fees keep going up and up. Understandably, Newcastle wants to keep their best homegrown talent at the club for the upcoming season, while the Reds would have approached Longstaff with caution due to a serious injury suffered last term.
For what it’s worth, I think Longstaff needs another season at St. James’ Park. Sure, the price may go up £10-20million, perhaps even more, but there would be less risk in the signing in twelve months time.
For now, we’re going to need a monster season from the likes of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, while we should expect to see better from Fred and an ever-improving Andreas Pereira.
