Man United have apparently reached an agreement in principle with Raphael Varane.
After agreeing a deal to sign Jadon Sancho, Manchester United’s attentions turned to adding a centre-half.
Harry Maguire needs an elite-level partner. We’ve seen exactly what he can do when given that at international level. The name most linked is Raphael Varane, with a new update coming almost daily in the saga.
The latest little snippet of information comes from journalist Julien Maynard. Apparently, United have reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with the star Frenchman.
The Reds are currently negotiating a fee with Real Madrid, with Varane keen on exploring the Premier League.
It’s also worth reiterating that Varane’s contract expires in twelve months’ time, so Madrid have a pretty big decision to make about the Frenchman’s future.
Make no mistake about it, this would be a world-class signing. However, Real Madrid aren’t going let their defender leave easily. He’s an integral part of their defence and they’ve already lost Sergio Ramos this summer.
They’ll fight and scrap for every single extra penny from United if they’re forced into selling Varane, who, at aged 28, is slap-bang in the middle of his prime. We’re talking about someone who could have a Virgil van Dijk or Ruben Dias-type impact here.
Hopefully, United can pull this one out of the bag. Add Varane to a summer where they’ve already signed Sancho and we’re bringing in some serious quality. Will that be enough to mount a genuine title challenge this season? Who knows, but it’d be a big stride forward.
