Man United are closing in on the addition of Martin Dubravka.
A back-up goalkeeper shot to the top of the list of needs when Manchester United allowed Dean Henderson to head out on loan.
Simply put, Erik ten Hag doesn’t trust Tom Heaton enough to reliably sit in-behind David de Gea, hence the club have spent resources on looking for a new number two.
Yan Sommer and Kevin Trapp were linked, though it’s Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka who has popped up most frequently in the gossip columns.
The latest information in that saga comes from Jonathan Shrager, who is usually spot on when it comes to United news.
According to his connections, United have now ‘reached a full agreement’ with Newcastle over signing the Slovakia international.
The deal isn’t done yet, with a few personal terms left to finalise with the 33-year-old. However, the deal now ‘looks promising’.
This is as close as a done deal you’re going to get before the signing is actually made official.
Dubravka is someone who has seemingly been eyed by Ten Hag, with the veteran no doubt expected to come in and challenge De Gea from day one.
At the very least, this move should give De Gea that extra motivation to work even harder for his starting job. For Dubravka, he’s already backing up Nick Pope over at Newcastle. Surely he’d rather be a back-up for the 20-time Premier League champions?
That said, I really believe Dubravka can push for first-team minutes over the course of the 2022/23 season. Sooner or later, patience will run out with De Gea, who continues to struggle with the ball at feet.
