Man United reach verbal agreement to sign Mandzukic in January: report

After Manchester United’s goal-scoring struggles, it was only going to be a matter of time before the Red Devils were linked with moves for a new front-man.

Several names have been linked and this morning another has re-surfaced; Mario Mandzukic.

The Croat was constantly rumoured to be heading to Old Trafford over the summer, although obviously that move never materialised…

Today, though, several sections of the English media are picking up on a story from Italy – where Mandzukic currently plies his trade.

According to Tuttosport, translated by both Sky Sports and The Sun, United have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ to sign the Juventus forward in the January transfer window.

Now 33 and having not played a game for the Old Lady this term, it seems as though Mandzukic isn’t in Maurizio Sarri’s long-term plans in Turin.

Tuttosport Thursday print.

With United desperate to add some fire-power, it is a move that could make sense – albeit only in a short-term capacity.

My main concern is that, over the last four seasons, Mandzukic hasn’t been prolific. In fact his tally has only gone downhill since his move to Juventus – though he was consistently scoring 20+ goals a campaign during his time at Bayern Munich…

It’s a gamble, but it’s one United simply need to take as they have no other choice. Goals are coming at a premium for the Red Devils and that simply has to change sooner rather than later. The real question is, how far off the top four pace will United be when January eventually rolls around…?
