Man United are set to try and steal the signing of Lisandro Martinez from right under Arsenal’s nose.
There can be no getting away from the fact that a new central defender simply has to come through the Old Trafford doors this summer.
Manchester United conceded the fifteenth-most goals in the Premier League last season. That absolutely has to change if we’re serious about challenging for trophies again.
The need to bring in a new centre-back only grows when you factor in the real possibility of both Phil Jones and Eric Bailly leaving the Theatre of Dreams before long.
Today, a new name has been thrown into the ring; Lisandro Martinez.
Of late, all the talk has been about his Ajax teammate, Jurrien Timber. Though that deal looks dead in the water and Erik ten Hag has identified another one of his former players as a potential signing.
It’s The Mirror with the scoop, who state that United are ready to ‘gazump’ Arsenal and sign the 24-year-old Argentine this summer.
The Gunners allegedly had a £25m bid for Martinez rejected by Ajax just last week, so that fee feels like a good starting point for the 20-time Premier League champions if they’re serious about bringing in Timber’s current centre-back partner.
United need to start signing players and quickly, as we’re now just a week away from the first set of players returning to the AON Training Complex for the start of pre-season. As things stand, it feels like we’re miles away from making any noteworthy additions to the squad.
Martinez isn’t a player I’m completely clued up on, though I will say his height worries me. Standing at 5’7 as a centre-back in any professional league is tough, though there’s a reason we don’t see many top-class centre-backs under the 6-foot mark.
Although Martinez is accustomed to Ten Hag’s system, I do worry that he’ll be exposed aerially in the Premier League.
