Man United could be looking to make two signings from FC Barcelona this summer.
With the squad looking in pretty dire shape right now, Erik ten Hag will start to realise just how big of a task he has on his hands.
The powers-that-be at Old Trafford have to seriously back their man going into a huge summer transfer window, with signings needed in pretty much every area of the pitch.
One man United were linked with a week or so ago is Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman’s name is back in the media once again, though this time, so is another of his FC Barcelona teammates in some sort of potential double transfer swoop.
It’s Fichajes with the scoop, with Sport Witness translating and relaying the information. They claim that both De Jong and Memphis Depay (yes, you read that correctly), are of interest to the Old Trafford club.
According to Fichajes’ information, United are ‘ready to make’ a first offer of £84m (€100m) for the double signing this summer. Whether that fee is believed to be enough to secure the signatures remains to be seen.
There’s also rumours of a potential swap deal being floated by Fichajes. They state that both Alex Telles and Scott McTominay could be used as a makeweight in any transfer, though Sport Witness are quick to point out that it seems unlikely these two would make a Camp Nou switch.
De Jong, who has worked with Ten Hag before, strikes me as someone who’d be a direct upgrade on what United currently have in the middle of the park. With Paul Pogba leaving, the Red Devils need to bring in at least one top-quality midfielder – and the 24-year-old would undoubtedly fit that bill.
As for Depay, well, we’ve been here before. The former PSV Eindhoven man struggled at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal. He’s obviously a much better player now than he was then, but will the ghosts of his past come back to haunt him? I’m not sure…
