Manchester United may well be ready to make their move to sign RB Leipzig defender, Dayot Upamecano.
Over the summer, transfer links to centre-backs were appearing in the media almost daily. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was seemingly left unconvinced, though in the end, no centre-halves were acquired.
Well, the start to the season certainly wouldn’t have eased the manager’s fears. Now, United are being linked with RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano once again.
The story comes from SportBILD (Wednesday print edition), translated via Sport Witness. It is claimed that United have ‘pledged their interest’ in signing the 22-year-old emerging star. However, Manchester City and Real Madrid are also keen.
Since moving to the German outfit in 2017, Upamecano has gone from strength-to-strength, so it makes sense that some of the world’s biggest clubs are showing a willingness to do a deal.
Right now, Upamecano is under contract until 2023. However, there is a release clause of £40m (€45m) which comes into effect next summer, meaning Leipzig could be powerless to let their star man depart.
Check out the Bild article on United interest in Upamecano:
The Red Devils still need to find that long-term partner for Harry Maguire, that much is obvious. For that position, someone with pace would be ideal, which Upamecano has in abundance. You get the feeling that, on paper, it’s a duo which could work.
However forgive me, I watched United absolutely decimate Upamecano during that 5-0 Champions League win last month. Upamecano looked shockingly-bad in that game.
He looked every bit like a young man who still has ample room to grow, while in the Premier League, I don’t doubt that he’ll have off-days. The last thing United need is to bring another inconsistent centre-half into the mix, which is why, at this time, I’d like to see us go for a player with more experience.
