Manchester United’s biggest concern going into a crucial summer transfer window is their defence.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now realises just how monumental-a-task he faces at Old Trafford. It’s going to take years to get back amongst the elite sides, but I guess we have to start somewhere.
Bringing in a new full-back has to be amongst the priorities, and today, a new name has been thrown into the ring. According to Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (translated by The Sun), it is being claimed that United are ready to offer Matteo Darmian plus £42million to sign Juventus right-back, Joao Cancelo.
The 24-year-old has only been in Turin for a year following his move from Valencia CF, but the Portuguese hasn’t been able to hold down a regular starting job, which could lead to him wanting to leave this coming summer.
This could be a double win for United. Not only would they be clearing Darmian off their books, but they’d be adding a massive upgrade in the form of Cancelo.
He’s versatile as he can play on both sides of the defence and he’d immediately be the best full-back at the club. With the fees involved, this feels like a no-brainer for me, but United’s achilles heel this season could well be the fact that there is no Champions League football on offer. That could well come back to haunt the Red Devils.
