Man United are calm about the Kobbie Mainoo situation, amid interest from Manchester City.
Cast your mind back to pre-season. Kobbie Mainoo was the talk of the town. It felt like Manchester United had unveiled another gem from the academy, with the midfielder looking right at home within the first-team setup at Old Trafford.
However, injury struck. We’ve not seen Mainoo play for the senior squad in a competitive game this season – though that could all change today.
Ahead of the Reds’ trip to Fulham in the early kickoff, some interesting rumours came to light, suggesting that Manchester City were looking at luring Mainoo to The Etihad Stadium…
Well, the Manchester Evening News have somewhat quashed those rumours, claiming United are ‘relaxed’ about long-standing interest in the starlet, from their fierce rival.
It is believed that Mainoo went to both United and City academies before he was aged nine, at which point, he chose United.
The MEN understand that City have attempted to lure him away at ages where it would have been possible, Mainoo has rejected those advances and chosen to stay at Old Trafford instead.
At this point, City interest in Mainoo is viewed as nothing new, with the player under contract until 2027, meaning the ball is firmly in United’s court as things stand.
We could well see a glimpse of Mainoo on the field today, particularly as the midfield continues to struggle. He’s obviously been out for so long, but as an option off the bench for the final 20 minutes, it would be lovely to see the Stockport-born midfielder out on the field.
Let’s hope Mainoo plays well, while also continuing to reject advances from the noisy neighbours.
