Man United remain admirers of Kieran Trippier despite changing plans: report

Manchester United are still keen on Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News. However, Manchester have shelved plans of signing Trippier this month – due to a ten-week ban that’s currently looming over his head for a breach of betting regulations.

Trippier played against Sevilla on Tuesday night, as his suspension has currently gone to appeal.

United, understandably, wouldn’t want to sign the Englishman this month – only for Trippier to miss two-and-a-half months of football later on in the campaign.

The Reds, however, ‘remain admirers’ of the 30-year-old defender who has eighteen months left on his current contract.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to provide direct competition for Aaron Wan-BIssaka, just as how Luke Shaw and Alex Telles are battling it out on the opposite flank.

Trippier has Premier League experience, is a boyhood Mancunian and would certainly improve this Manchester United squad.

Why a summer move made sense anyway

If you believe reports, Trippier has been on United’s radar for a number of months. However, with Atletico Madrid knee-deep in a La Liga title race, it always felt unlikely that the Englishman would turn his back on that at this point.

Now that a ten-week ban looks inevitable, United would be daft to move for him now as there’s every chance he’d miss at least half of our remaining games.

Plus, waiting until the summer would also mean Trippier would be significantly cheaper as his contract with Atleti continues to run down.

I still think this is an excellent fit. Trippier brings something that Wan-Bissaka doesn’t – attacking quality. He’s also a mean free-kick taker which is definitely something United could do with more of.

In a deal that’d be relatively cheap, this feels like a no-brainer. Trippier would be moving back to his home city. While United would be getting a cracking footballer. Make it happen, Reds.
