Man United remain desperate to sign Frenkie de Jong…
Man United spent the summer pursuing a move to bring in Frenkie de Jong from FC Barcelona. The pendulum swung back and forth throughout the transfer period, though in the end, the Red Devils came up short.
It always felt like the Dutchman preferred to stay with the Nou Camp club, though United never gave up hope and continued to push to make the deal happen.
Many just assumed that De Jong’s rejection, coupled with United signing Casemiro, this wouldn’t be a transfer that would be revisited. Well…
It’s Fichajes with the claim. Thanks to the MEN Live Blog for the translation. Apparently, United still remain ‘desperate’ to sign the 25-year-old, with the Reds not giving up the chase just yet.
De Jong has dipped in and out of the Barca team this season, even playing some games as a defender. Obviously, that’s not ideal for the player, who predominantly plies his trade in central midfield.
OTF’s verdict
Honestly, I’m just exhausted with this transfer rumour. It feels to us like the media is flogging a dead horse.
No doubt Ten Hag would absolutely love to work with De Jong again – though it just doesn’t look likely when you consider all the factors.
De Jong is happy to stay at Barca, remaining a bit-part player over becoming a regular starter here in Manchester. That should tell you all you need to know about his career ambition. Personally, I’d prefer the club to avoid players like that. This United team needs genuine commitment and 100% effort every single time any one player steps out on the field.
