Man United still have Declan Rice on their transfer radar for the 2022 transfer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United had a top quality transfer window. From bringing Cristiano Ronaldo home, to sorting out their defensive issues with a move for Raphael Varane. Factor in some Jadon Sancho for good measure.
However, one problem position remains – central midfield. Solskjaer and United opted against signing a new box-to-box midfielder this term, probably because the money wasn’t available.
That won’t stop the Reds dipping their toes into the market in that area next summer, though…
The story comes from ESPN, who state that Declan Rice is the man United have identified as a target. Apparently, United ‘remain keen’ on signing the 22-year-old next summer, who is currently plying his trade for West Ham United.
United decided against investing in midfield this time around, though Solskjaer is amongst a whole host of clubs who are keen on adding Rice.
There is further good news for United, too, with West Ham likely to lower their current £80m+ valuation for the Englishman who was a stalwart for England at the European Championships over the summer.
Rice is a player who continues to improve year-on-year and there’s no doubt he’d beef up our United squad if this move does happen.
However, I do wonder if the sort of fees mentioned are just a little too steep. Rice plays a similar style to Scott McTominay, with the difference in quality fairly minimal.
Personally, I’d keep developing McTominay, while having one eye on Rice – and potentially some other, cheaper targets too.
It’s also worth pointing out a lot can change between now and next summer. Who knows who’ll be available for transfer at that point…
