Manchester United are being linked with a move to sign Lazio midfielder, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
Ah yes, we’ve been here before and no doubt we’ll be here again – until the Serbia international eventually moves on from the Serie A outfit.
Today’s story comes from Gazzetta dello Sport, who state that Manchester United are ‘ready to court’ the 26-year-old midfielder again.
Milinkovic-Savic has played 35 games for Lazio this term, scoring seven goals across all competitions. Both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are credited with interest, which should give you an insight into his talents as a footballer.
Apparently, ‘much will depend’ on the Serie A’s final standings, with the player more likely to move if Lazio miss out on Champions League football for next season. Right now, they’re sitting in sixth place, six points off Atalanta in fourth, having played a game less.
Built in a central midfield role, this interest does surprise me somewhat. With Nemanja Matic continuing to get older, you’d have thought that the Old Trafford club would be looking for someone who can play in the defensive midfield slot, as opposed to an out-and-out central playmaker.
So what does this mean?
Well, the first thing that came to my mind was Paul Pogba. Perhaps the Frenchman is still deadset on leaving the Theatre of Dreams this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fully aware of that and looking to find a replacement.
Milinkovic-Savic would be an astute addition if that were the case, though he certainly wouldn’t come cheap. It also lets us know that the gaffer isn’t fully convinced by Donny van de Beek, who felt like the Pogba replacement at the time of all the talk surrounding the future of United’s number six last summer.
