Man United see Kieran Trippier bid rejected by Atletico Madrid: report

Man United have had a bid for Kieran Trippier turned down over the last few weeks.

Manchester United’s defence, particularly at centre-back, needs work. Harry Maguire has been brilliant but he needs a partner. At left-back, Luke Shaw was pushed on by the arrival of Alex Telles. Now, the Reds are looking to make something similar happen over on the right-hand side.

Kieran Trippier has been consistently linked with a potential Old Trafford switch this transfer window. As of now, though, nothing has materialised.

Apparently, that’s not for the want of trying. United have seen their bid for the 30-year-old rejected, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Italian did hint that another move could be made, by adding ‘let’s see what happens in the next weeks’…

“Manchester United made a bid for Kieran Trippier like three weeks ago which wasn’t accepted by Atletico Madrid, lets see what happens in the next weeks,” Romano told the Here We Go podcast.

Trippier is coming off the back of winning a La Liga title with Atletico Madrid so his confidence will be soaring. The question is, does he want to leave that situation and return to his homeland?

It’s pretty clear that Atleti want to keep him, though they do have a decision to make as his contract expires next summer. It all comes down to whether United and Atleti can find some middle-ground in regards to a transfer fee.

As of right now, I’ll be surprised if this happens. Atleti aren’t budging on their asking price and are willing to risk losing him for nothing. For United, the back-up option is keeping Diogo Dalot at Old Trafford for another twelve months.

That said, Aaron Wan-Bissaka could do with some firmer competition. We’ve seen just how important the Telles signing was. Shaw is now arguably the best left-back in the world. Imagine if Wan-Bissaka feels someone breathing heavily down his neck? He’ll only improve which is only a good thing for United…
