Man United ‘seem to be in pole position’ for Cody Gakpo signing

Man United are still frontrunners to acquire Gody Gakpo ahead of the close of the transfer window.

A deal for Antony looks pretty close. We’ve even had the old ‘Here we go’ from Fabrizio Romano…

To us here at Old Trafford Faithful, that felt like the end of any pursuit to acquire Cody Gakpo. We just assumed it was one or the other.

Well, that may not be the case. Reports from Gakpo’s homeland, De Telegraaf, with the translation from Sport Witness, seem to think a deal is very much still a possibility.

Their story discusses where Gakpo’s future will lie, claiming that United ‘seem to be in pole position’ to sign the 23-year-old before the transfer deadline.

De Telegraaf have decided to take a look at ‘what weighs the most’ before Gakpo makes his final decision.

If the player wants to be better off financially, then a move abroad makes sense. On the other hand, with a World Cup looming, Gakpo should stay with PSV if he wants to ensure of his place in the Dutch squad. They describe a potential move to Old Trafford as ‘playing Russian roulette’ with his international future, at least in the short term.

As you’d expect, current PSV manager and United legend, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is ‘not happy’ with the situation. He wants to know exactly where his club stands in regards to Gakpo’s future.

I like Gakpo. I think in the long run, he could be a solid signing. However, the young man still feels a little rough around the edges. He has an awful long way to go before he’s ready to compete at the Premier League level on a weekly basis. This would be a signing with the future in mind, as opposed to bringing Gakpo in to start regularly in the here and now.
