Man United apparently had scouts keeping a close eye on Adrien Rabiot, as France lost to Switzerland on penalties.
After a move for Jadon Sancho is officially announced, you’d expect Manchester United to swiftly move onto securing other signings.
Although centre-half is arguably the biggest need for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a new midfielder definitely wouldn’t go amiss. Well, Adrien Rabiot is seemingly on United’s radar.
According to the Daily Star, United sent a scout to watch the 26-year-old midfielder in action at EURO 2020. The Frenchman would start for Les Belus against Switzerland, but struggle in a new role given to him by Didier Deschamps.
Rabiot, who plays his club football for Juventus, would be deployed in a left wing-back role which obviously isn’t anything close to his natural position.
Although Rabiot would play out the full game, the United scout probably couldn’t have gauged much about the midfielder’s overall quality due to the fact he was stuck out on the left-wing for the duration.
Domestically, Rabiot hasn’t quite made the impact many would have liked during his first two seasons with the Serie A giants Juve. Hence why a possible transfer away from the Old Lady is already being talked up.
United were keen on signing Rabiot back then and obviously, that hasn’t changed now. The question is, Rabiot didn’t want to sign for the Old Trafford club back then. Why should the Reds bend over backwards to get him this time around?
As a box-to-box midfielder, Rabiot is a good squad player to have. That said, I’d much prefer to see the Reds go out there and sign a world-class defensive midfielder instead. I like Rabiot but I think it’s a case of wrong time, wrong place.
