Man United are going to allow Raphael Varane to leave on a free transfer this summer.

Manchester United Football Club are still undergoing major change. Both on and off the field. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are looking to make their mark this summer, overhauling the playing squad while giving the manager a real platform to build on from.

One man whose future is up in the air is Raphael Varane. For all his greatness as a centre-half, there’s genuine concerns about his fitness. Ask him to play more than one game a week and he struggles with that at this stage of his career.

The Frenchman’s contract expires this summer, leaving Erik ten Hag and the powers-that-be with a real decision to make.

According to Football Insider, that choice has been made, with United ‘set to allow’ the key star to leave on a free this summer, after new talks behind the scenes.

Letting Varane leave is said to free up ‘huge wages’ over the summer, with the Reds choosing not to activate a one-year extension clause in the Frenchman’s contract.

When fit and healthy, Varane is a guaranteed starter for United. His class, calmness, defensive awareness and overall skill is second to none in that defensive line. However, his injuries have been worse than ever this term.

I’ve lost count of how many games he’s started and not been able to finish. He’s not alone in that regard I suppose, but it doesn’t help the situation at all.

This really is a decision that’s going to divide opinion, but when all is said and done, I feel like letting Varane walk is the right one. Availability is so massive for United right now and this is a club that needs someone reliable who can step up and start week-in-week-out in that ever-changing defence.
