Manchester United simply must have a centre-back atop their list of transfer needs.
A name that has been mentioned a fair bit is Harry Maguire. However, if the Daily Mirror’s latest story turns out to be true, the one they call ‘slabhead’ won’t be moving to Old Trafford during this window.
Their report states that United are set to miss out on the 26-year-old’s signature, with Maguire ‘poised’ to head to local rivals Manchester City in a £65million deal…
Apparently, Maguire is ready to move on from Leicester City after two seasons with the Midlands side. The Foxes value the centre-back at around £80million, while the Reds offered £40million for the services of slabhead. Needless to say, Leicester didn’t even entertain the offer, although they are willing to accept City’s £65million bid.
Even if the 20-time Premier League champions did go ahead and match said £65million offer, The Mirror add that the Etihad is Maguire’s preferred destination as he wants to work with Pep Guardiola.
This latest news would explain United’s moves for Issa Diop over the last couple of days, although it is bitterly disappointing to miss out on Maguire. He’s a top player who would have improved our starting line-up from the get-go. It’s made even worse that he’s heading to our direct rivals.
I guess rejection is something we’re going to have to get used to, particularly with the lack of Champions League football on the table…
