Harry Maguire will not be sold to Chelsea this summer.
Manchester United Football Club have had a poor start to the campaign. All the good work done by the Red Devils in pre-season has since gone up in smoke.
Erik ten Hag has a cut a frustrated figure on those sidelines throughout the first couple of fixtures. It doesn’t get any easier, with Liverpool visiting old Trafford this evening.
Over the weekend, The Guardian ran an interesting story, detailing Chelsea’s interest in Harry Maguire. The London club are apparently weighing up a move for the Reds captain, in the event that they fall short in pursuit of Wesley Fofana.
However, United are set to block any approach for the 29-year-old, who has struggled during the opening couple of matches. Apparently, Maguire is not for sale.
Chelsea actually wanted to use United’s loan interest in Christian Pulisic as a makeweight for part of any deal for Maguire, though United aren’t looking to cash in on their club captain.
For all of his faults over the last couple of years, Maguire hasn’t been the issue with the defence during the opening couple of games here.
However, it’s believed that Maguire could well be dropped for the Liverpool game this evening, with information suggesting that Raphael Varane could partner Lisandro Martinez at the heart of defence. If that’s the case, I’m honestly not sure why United aren’t at least open to a Maguire sale.
Benching a club captain, two games into the season, is only going to throw up more questions than answers. The last thing United need is more drama at the moment. If Ten Hag already doesn’t trust Maguire, why not have a clean break and choose a new permanent captain, rather than having these constant rumours swirling around?
Perhaps a change in scenery is exactly what’s required for Maguire. I don’t doubt he’d do well for Chelsea. Maybe that’s why United aren’t prepared to sanction his sale.
