Man United set to sell Alvaro Fernandez after buy clause triggered by Benfica

Man United will sell Alvaro Fernandez on a permanent deal this summer.

Manchester United will look to trim down their squad somewhat significantly over the next few months, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS look to effectively hit the reset button.

Raphael Varane is the only confirmed departure so far, though over the last 24 hours, we’ve had another outbound transfer that’s signed and sealed.

It comes from Fabrizio Romano, who states that Alvaro Fernandez will leave the club. According to his information, a deal has now been completed, with Benfica set to purchase the left-back outright. United will sell the 21-year-old, for a fee of around £5m.

Fernandez will sign a five-year deal with Benfica, though United do have a buy back clause and a sell-on clause included in the contract. Obviously, either of these could come in handy if/when Benfica sell the Spaniard.

Check out Fabrizio Romano’s X post on the news here:

Fernandez was on the fringes of the first team for about a year. I actually believe he’d have played his fair share of minutes had United decided to keep him around this season, purely due to the fact that Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw have been injured.

The left-back is mega-talented and no doubt he has taken it up a notch after playing regularly over in Portugal. For Benfica, this is a no-brainer as they’re getting a top player for a minimal transfer fee.

To be honest with you, I would have preferred to see what Fernandez can do over pre-season, before making a final decision on his future. I understand there’s a chance he can come back in future – though the club could have potentially saved themselves an awful lot of money here.

  1. This is why ETH has to go Fernandez should have been playing for United this last five months when we had no other left back available , Benfica will be laughing at us , Six Million is a steal and they would not buy him if they didn’t think he would good enough ,Just frustrates you
