Man United set to walk away from Jarrad Branthwaite talks ‘soon’ if no compromise made

Man United could end their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, if Everton aren’t prepared to lower their asking price.

Manchester United have to bring in at least one central defender this summer. In an ideal world, the club will bring in two, though with money tight, some decisions have to be made.

The name most linked with filling the void is Jarrad Branthwaite. The Everton man is currently away with England at the European Championship, after enjoying an excellent 2023/24 campaign with his club.

Now, ESPN have provided a concerning update in the Reds’ pursuit of the Englishman. According to their latest, United ‘will walk away’ from a deal to sign the defender this summer, if Everton remain unwilling to compromise on their asking price.

United are still ‘keen’ on signing Branthwaite and completing a transfer, though the Reds have seen an initial £35m bid turned down. Everton want double that figure to let Branthwaite leave.

ESPN sources believe United have told Everton that they do not have the funds to pay that amount this summer, with money thought to be tight due to Premier League Profit & Sustainability rules.

Everton are well within their rights to remain firm on their asking price. At the end of the day, United have to either pay up or move onto other targets sooner rather than later.

It does feel like a situation where Erik ten Hag will once again have to look at some back-up options, with the likes of Leny Yoro a possible target – though he will not be easy to sign amid interest from Real Madrid.

Let’s hope that Everton eventually cave in to United’s demands to lower the asking price. Though I wouldn’t expect that to happen until much later on in the window.
