Manchester United’s midfield is looking rather sparse in terms of numbers. That’s before you factor in Paul Pogba’s potential departure…
The names of Sean Longstaff and Bruno Fernandes just won’t go away, although today, a new name has been thrown into the ring… It’s that if Tiemoue Bakayoko – who currently plies his trade for Chelsea, although he spent last season on loan with AC Milan.
RMC report that Manchester United have actually made contact with Chelsea about the 24-year-old, while the 20-time Premier League winners are ‘very interested’ in signing the player. PSG are also keen on the Frenchman.
I think it’s fair to say that when Chelsea initially signed Bakayoko from AS Monaco, things didn’t exactly go according to plan. His debut season was a forgettable one, hence why he was sent to the Serie A on loan.
After a poor start with Milan, things picked up in the second-half of the season and it actually looked as though the Italian giants were going to activate a buy clause within his contract. Eventually, that didn’t happen and he was sent back to his parent club.
For me, this is underwhelming. To hear United are interested worries me. Bakayoko hasn’t shown anything close to being good enough to play week-in-week-out Premier League football and I’m not sure his twelve months in Italy has changed that.
Chelsea would likely demand a pretty hefty fee to let him move to a fellow Premier League club, too. And who knows, he may actually be a part of Frank Lampard’s plans for the 2019/20 campaign…
