Man United have added Christoph Baumgartner to their list of prospective transfer targets.
Although a move for Jadon Sancho looks practically signed, sealed and delivered, there are still other areas of the squad that need work. Amongst them is midfield.
However, it seems as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to add another attacking midfielder. As opposed to a more defensive-minded midfield player – which is comfortably the bigger need.
The story comes from Kicker, who link the Reds with a move to sign Hoffenheim’s Christoph Baumgartner. The Austrian actually scored the winner for his country during their final group game of EURO 2020, before his side would be dumped out of the tournament by Italy.
Now the focus for Baumgartner is back on club football, with Kicker writing that United are showing an interest in the emerging 21-year-old midfielder. They’ll face competition, though, with Liverpool also keen.
The story claims that both United and Liverpool have ‘dealt’ with the midfielder, which presumably means they’ve been in touch with Baumgartner’s agent about the prospects of a transfer.
Baumgartner is a fantastic footballer who is only going to get better. However, this transfer doesn’t make sense as United need someone who can protect our defence, rather than hurt opposing ones.
Factor in a recently signed new contract that keeps the Austrian tied down until 2025 and suddenly this transfer becomes a pricey one. When United have other glaring needs in the squad, I struggle to see how this move is anywhere close to a priority.
Hopefully, this is just paper talk or United trying to gauge how much Baumgartner may cost in the future. As right now, there’s very little sense in adding another attacking midfielder into the mix.
