Man United are keen on Leeds United shot-stopper, Illan Meslier.
David de Gea has been a truly outstanding servant for Manchester United Football Club. However, all good things must come to an end at some point.
The Spaniard is the best shot-stopper I’ve ever seen, though question marks remain about his distribution – meaning he could be deemed expendable by Erik ten Hag.
The likes of David Raya have been linked as a possible replacement for De Gea, while Leeds United’s Illan Meslier is another option.
Football Insider have another update for us in regard to United’s possible pursuit of Meslier.
Apparently, United are named amongst the sides who have ‘shown interest’ in signing the 23-year-old. Chelsea and Tottenham also get a mention by Football Insider.
Leeds United have placed a £40m asking price on the Frenchman’s head, despite Meslier recently signing a new contract at Elland Road.
Despite being under no pressure to sell right now, Leeds United understand that if they’re relegated, Meslier would want to leave. If a £40m offer comes in, they will not stand in his way.
United’s rivalry with Leeds United adds an extra layer to this one. I’d imagine they’d want to sell to anyone else but Manchester United, so that could further hike the price up for the Old Trafford club.
Meslier is still so young for a goalkeeper, though it does feel like he’s already been around for a fair while. In that Leeds side, he gets plenty of shot-stopping practice and I have to say, I’ve been largely impressed with his work.
I still think moving for someone like Raya, or even Brighton’s Robert Sanchez, makes more sense due to the fact that there’s no rivalry inflating the cost of the player.
