Man United are apparently in the hunt to sign Rodrigo Betancur, who currently plays for Spurs.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are playing some good football. It largely comes from control in midfield, with the signings of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen certainly helping.
However, the gaffer is still trying to further improve that area of the field, according to reports. The man being eyed by Ten Hag? Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Betancur.
It’s El Crack Deportivo with the scoop, thanks to our friends, Stretty News, for the translation. Apparently, United are actively in the race to sign the 25-year-old central midfielder. Liverpool and Real Madrid are also being linked with a deal to sign the Uruguay man.
Under Antonio Conte, Betancur has certainly improved. He’s been influential for the White Hart Lane side since moving to North London in January 2022.
Betancur has scored five goals and racked up a couple of assists so far this season, proving he’s not only an ideal box-to-box midfielder, but also a goal threat.
Here’s where I have concerns… Betancur hasn’t been with Spurs for a year. They’re a notoriously tough club to negotiate with. Are they really going to part with one of their top performers? And to a direct rival no less?
Ten Hag may well be a big fan of Betancur, but signing him is far easier said than done. Spurs would rather sell overseas if their hand is forced, but for now, I genuinely don’t see the midfielder leaving in 2023.
The only way the club would get this deal done is by paying way over the odds. With money looking tight right now, I’d definitely be surprised to see this move happen.
