Man United were in contact with the agent of Antoine Griezmann last summer, as they weighed up a move for the Frenchman.
It felt like over the summer, Manchester United weren’t really happy with Cristiano Ronaldo. The new boss seemingly tried to scoot Ronnie out of the backdoor, though there were no interested parties.
At the same time, the work would have been done behind the scenes to find the ideal replacement for CR7. At the time, several names were linked.
Well, yesterday, Sky Sports News revealed another player that United tried to sign over the summer; Antoine Griezmann.
Apparently, United ‘sought dialogue’ with the 31-year-old’s agent over the possibility of signing the star last summer.
United want to arrange a meeting with Griezmann’s camp to discuss his situation and gauge whether the Frenchman would be interested in a transfer to Old Trafford.
While Griezmann was flattered by United’s interest, the veteran forward’s priority remained securing a permanent transfer back to Atletico Madrid. At the time, he was only on a loan deal from FC Barcelona.
Since then, Griezmann has enjoyed an excellent World Cup, helping his side to the final in Qatar and being arguably their most important player at times throughout the campaign.
There’s no doubt that even though he’s past his peak years, there’s still a top-class footballer there in Griezmann, who would have added an awful lot to this United dressing room.
Sadly, the Frenchman chose a different path, with United unable to find that natural goalscorer to bring in during the summer. Eventually, Ronaldo secured his departure from the club, leading the Red Devils to bring in Wout Weghorst in the mid-season window.
