Man United starlet set for permanent Reds exit this summer in £5.1m deal

Man United are all set to sell Alvaro Carreras on a permanent deal, with the left-back ready to join Benfica for good.

INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are looking to make their mark at Manchester United this summer, setting the tone for what is hopefully going to be the beginning of this club moving back in the right direction.

The first order of business is to wipe the slate clean, clear some space in the dressing room and generate some funds that can be re-invested back into the playing squad.

It seems as though the first major sale has already been agreed, with Portuguese media outlet Record (via The Express) providing information on Alvaro Carreras’ future.

Apparently, a deal has been struck with Benfica, as the United starlet is set for a permanent Reds exit this summer for a £5.1m (6m euro) fee.

Carreras, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2020, has spent this campaign on loan with Benfica, impressing over in the Portuguese league, with the club now deciding to sign the Spaniard outright. They’re going to activate a clause within his loan contract to make this move happen.

First and foremost, this is blatantly what United wanted to happen, otherwise they wouldn’t have given Benfica the option to buy at all.

I thought Carreras was going to stay at Old Trafford this summer and prove his worth. Obviously, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but with injuries to Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, the 21-year-old would have almost certainly been given a run in the side.

This is likely to be the first of many major outgoings at the Theatre of Dreams this summer. I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised to see the club free up the best part of £1million-per-week in terms of wages, by selling players and letting others leave upon the expiry of their contracts.
