Man United still considering David Raya as transfer option

Man United still have eyes on Brentford goalkeeper, David Raya.

Manchester United Football Club haven’t had to worry about the goalkeeper position for the last decade. It’s all down to David de Gea’s genius.

Over the last six months or so, though, there have been question marks about his tactical fit in regard to the way Erik ten Hag likes to play out from the back.

Sometimes, possession is squandered needlessly by De Gea, who often boots the ball straight out of play, or completely misses his target. Although he’s getting better in that aspect, there’s still a chance the club could move in a different direction.

According to Give Me Sport, another Spaniard is who United are looking at; David Raya.

Apparently, United ‘continue to consider’ the 27-year-old as a transfer option heading into the summer, as the club wait on De Ge to agree a new deal.

It has been reported that the Reds wanted to drastically reduce De Gea’s current wages, with the current number one seeing his deal expiring pretty quickly.

This is a weird situation. Sometimes it’s better the devil you know. De Gea has rarely let United down when it matters most, though he will not be around forever.

Raya is a better stylistic fit, though he’s nowhere near De Gea’s level when it comes to shot-stopping ability and general goalkeeping skill.

Although United would improve possession-wise with Raya, I’d argue they’d concede more goals as De Gea comes up trumps time and time again just when you’re expecting our net to bulge. You also have to factor in the pressure that’d be on Raya as he moves to one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s no guarantee he’d be able to handle that – particularly at the start of his United career.
