Man United still in contract talks with Juan Mata: report

Amid all the David de Gea contract talks, it’s easy to forget that Juan Mata’s deal is also winding down.

In fact, the attacking midfielder is entering the last month of his contract, with the Manchester United #8 having until June 30th to decide if he wants to remain a Red Devil.

Mata, who signed from Chelsea in a £38million deal over five years ago now, has been in and out of the team at Old Trafford. It can be argued that three different managers have all utilised him incorrectly – which has led to an ineffectiveness from the Spaniard.

Anyway, BBC journalist Simon Stone weighed in on the contract stand-off last night, claiming that talks between United and the classy 31-year-old will continue – although they’ll have to act fast as the expiration date is quickly approaching.

In terms of likability, there aren’t many better than Mata. He’s a brilliant person and the work he does with Common Goal is just superb. However, this is a cut-throat business. Where footballing productivity is concerned, if United are going to continue using him in the wrong position, then it probably makes sense for him to leave.
