Man United are still interested in signing Cody Gakpo, according to transfer insider, Dean Jones.
For all intents and purposes, Manchester United had an excellent summer transfer window. The club delivered Erik ten hag several players he wanted. All of whom have made a positive impression on the football field.
One area of priority for the boss was right-wing. The club searched far and wide for the perfect player. Eventually, Antony was acquired, though another name hotly-tipped with a potential Reds switch was Cody Gakpo.
The PSV Eindhoven winger enjoyed a stunning 2021/22 campaign. He’s started 2022/23 in similar vein. United’s eyes aren’t the only ones watching the Dutchman keenly.
Despite Antony’s excellent start to life in Manchester, interest in Gakpo remains. That’s according to journalist and transfer insider, Dean Jones.
He states that there is ‘no doubt’ United are ‘still interested’ in signing the 23-year-old winger. Probably because the PSV man offers something different to the current crop of wide men at the club.
Check out what Dean Jones had to say on United signing Gakpo here:
“If you have got [Marcus] Rashford on the left, competing with [Jadon] Sancho.” Jones told GiveMeSport.
“If you’ve got Antony on the right, you’ve also got [Anthony] Elanga on the right and at the moment you’ve [Anthony] Martial and [Cristiano] Ronaldo as the two main striker options and the talk of a third, I don’t exactly think that’s where Gakpo fits in, but there’s no doubt United are still interested in him.”
I have to be honest. Gakpo does give me Memphis Depay vibes. This is a signing that could go either way, though Ten Hag is yet to let the Reds down in terms of acquiring players. Until that happens, the club simply has no choice but to keep full faith in their manager.
In terms of when a deal could happen, the summer transfer window feels more likely. I just don’t see a way in which the club give more money to the boss in the January transfer window. It’d also be tough to convince PSV Eindhoven to sell in the mid-season window.
The only issue with that is, they’ll be considerably more interest when August rolls around. United absolutely have to have Champions League football on the table if there’s any chance of Gakpo choosing a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
