Man United are in the race to sign Erling Haaland.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester was rightly hailed a masterstroke.
However, the Portuguese superstar isn’t the long-term solution. Now aged 36, we’re going to get two, maybe three years maximum out of Ronnie. Then, United have to fill that striker void once again.
That’s where Erling Haaland comes in. It goes without saying, the young man from Norway is probably the hottest commodity within the sport right now. His goals and on-field presence while playing for Borussia Dortmund has been an absolute joy to witness.
Now, according to ESPN, United are in the race to sign the prolific striker – though they’re not alone. Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all also keen on signing the 21-year-old.
That’s not the only catch, though. Haaland wants a huge £30m-a-year in wages, making him amongst the top earners in world football.
There is one positive in all of this. Haaland can reportedly leave Dortmund at the end of this campaign, if a club triggers his £63m (€75m) release clause. It goes without saying, that’s an absolute steal in this day and age.
Obviously, only a handful of clubs can afford the £500k-a-week wage demands. Presumably, that wouldn’t be a problem for United, assuming they want to sign Haaland badly enough.
Don’t forget that Haaland actually turned his compatriot Solskjaer down when he made the move to Dortmund, with United interested in signing the youngster back then. Now, his value has gone up massively, while more clubs are now keen on adding him to their squad.
I’d like to think we’d be involved in the race. He’s too good-of-a-player to just sit back and watch him go to one of our rivals. Hopefully, we’re at the forefront of any potential move, though having a trophy or two in the cabinet come the end of the season will definitely help our case…
