Back on May 6th, we covered a story from German reporter Christian Falk, who claimed that Manchester United had made contact over Timo Werner.
It had all gone quiet on that front, until ESPN had their say yesterday. Apparently, United are still ‘monitoring’ the prolific 24-year-old’s ‘situation, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remaining keen to ‘revamp’ his forward line.
Werner, who has scored 30 goals across all competitions this term, is attracting heavy interest with Liverpool currently leading the way.
Again, Werner fits the profile of the sort of player that Solskjaer has preferred to move for; young, willing to learn, but ready to make an immediate impact.
With it looking unlikely (to me anyway), that Odion Ighalo stays at the Theatre of Dreams beyond this season, United need to fill that hole ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and Werner would be the ideal fit.
It all depends on how highly Solskjaer values Anthony Martial. Simply put, Werner isn’t going to be happy being a bench or rotational option. The German would be here to make that #9 jersey his own and I wouldn’t bet against him doing that.
In terms of transfer fee, United can definitely afford it. However, beating out Liverpool may be tough, particularly if his mind is already made up.
