Man United seemingly aren’t willing to throw in the towel in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong just yet…
This summer is quickly turning into a major disaster for Manchester United Football Club. The Red Devils started off with every intention of not overpaying for their targets and bringing in players who fit the system.
Since the 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend, the panic button feels like it has been when and truly hit. Out of nowhere, United were heavily linked with Marko Arnautovic and Adrien Rabiot. Both feel like second or third-choice options.
Everyone knows Frenkie de Jong is the number one target. Though yesterday, we covered a claim which stated United had ‘all but given up’ the chase of the Dutch midfielder.
Well, the Dutch take on the situation is very different. Marcel van der Kraan actually believes United still regard the 25-year-old as the ‘number one priority’ for both United and Erik ten Hag.
On top of that, Van der Kraan firmly believes United are ‘not giving up’ on signing the star ‘no matter what Frenkie says’.
“I understand here at the Dutch end, that Frenkie de Jong is still an absolute number one priority for Erik ten Hag and the club.” Van der Kraan said live on Sky Sports News.
“And they’re certainly not giving up no matter what Frenkie says in Barcelona. They have a deal with the agent of the player. It just depends on what is happening in the political department of Barcelona over his wages which they still owe him.”
To us here at Old Trafford Faithful, it feels like this one will go down to the wire – though convincing the player to join looks incredibly tough.
Sure, United and Barca may well have an agreement in place, though that’s all pointless if the player prefers to stay at the Camp Nou or move to Chelsea if he is forced out. Right now, the Reds feel like the third choice destination in this situation. I just do not see that changing over the next fortnight or so.
At what point do United just accept defeat and turn their attentions elsewhere? The likes of Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans represent genuinely excellent alternatives to De Jong. Though those guys aren’t going to be available forever.
Sooner rather than later, United simply have to give up on this one, rather than being suckered right back in.
