Well, talk about a dramatic U-turn… Literally a few hours ago, we covered a story from the usually reliable Guardian who claimed that Newcastle United were ‘on the verge’ of losing Sean Longstaff to Manchester United…
Well shortly after, the Evening Standard have released a completely contrasting story. They’re actually claiming that United have been ‘stunned’ by the £50million valuation placed on the 21-year-old by Newcastle, while the exorbitant asking price has left the transfer in doubt.
Apparently, the Old Trafford club expected to pay a maximum of £25million for the talented Longstaff, but United could now walk away from any potential deal to sign the Newcastle man.
I think it says an awful lot about football that a 21-year-old with nine Premier League games under his belt is to cost £50million, and don’t forget that Longstaff is going into the 2019/20 season on the back of suffering a knee ligament injury…
Don’t get me wrong, the lad is a proper player, but this does seem a little steep – although you do expect to pay a little more due to the ‘English premium’.
In a crucial transfer window for United, I just feel there is far better value elsewhere. As the summer draws to a close, my personal opinion is that the 20-time Premier League champions will eventually cave in and pay whatever it takes to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.
