The Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes saga is still ongoing – in what feels like the most-talked about transfer story during this January window.
We covered a rumour earlier today from the Daily Record, which suggested that Fernandes’ close friend was ‘confident’ that a January deal would go through.
Apparently, the Reds now willing to offer £46.7m upfront plus another £8.5m in bonuses – up from £42.5m upfront with £25.5m possible in bonuses (though those were unrealistic, including a large chunk for a Ballon d’Or top-three finish, for example…).
Understandably, Sporting want more cash up front, which United are now prepared to give them. What I find the most interesting is that the report claims a deal between United and the Portuguese giants could potentially be agreed today; paving the way for Fernandes to complete his switch to Old Trafford.
Fernandes would be a considerable upgrade on what United have in the attacking-midfield position, that feels like a no-brainer to me. However, time is running out and these two sides have to find some middle-ground sooner rather than later.
My stance hasn’t changed. This deal will likely get done, though I’d be surprised if we hear anything concrete today – particularly as United play tonight while Fernandes only played for Sporting just yesterday evening…
